Desu explores the real test of industrial safety leadership

Prevention is not new to industrial safety. Major-hazard regulation has included preventive logic for decades. In Europe, the Seveso regime has long been aimed at preventing major accidents involving dangerous substances, and in the United States, OSHA’s Process Safety Management standard was introduced in 1992 to prevent or minimise the consequences of catastrophic releases that can lead to toxic, fire or explosion hazards. What is changing is not the existence of prevention, but the breadth and intensity of its regulatory expression.

Across industrial safety, regulation is placing emphasis on earlier visibility, more formalised risk control and evidence that preventive measures are working in practice. The same pattern is visible in newer frameworks such as the EU methane rules. This development makes sense. Industrial environments are not becoming simpler. Operators are under pressure to improve resilience, maintain uptime, reduce environmental impact and demonstrate control over complex risk environments. Regulation that pushes risk visibility earlier reflects an understanding that in hazardous settings, safety cannot rely only on responding correctly after failure.

This is where a distinction needs to be made. Regulation can set direction. It can establish minimum expectations. It can require monitoring, inspection, reporting and protection measures. What it cannot do on its own is guarantee that a chosen protection strategy is truly well matched to the realities of a specific site. Safety is shaped by conditions more specific than regulation can ever be.

Translating requirements into a protection strategy

Compliance and protection are linked, but they are not the same thing. Compliance matters because it creates structure and accountability. But it remains a baseline. The harder question is whether those requirements have been translated into a protection strategy that is credible in the field. This gap becomes especially visible in flame and gas detection.

In principle, a site may meet the requirement to detect a hazard. In practice, the effectiveness of that decision depends on application fit. In environments such as petrochemical processing, offshore infrastructure or waste handling operations, a detector can be fully certified and still prove weaker than expected if its positioning, field of view, environmental tolerance or response profile do not reflect the real hazard scenario. The issue is not necessarily non-compliance. It is that formally acceptable choices are not always the strongest protective choices.

The same is true for gas detection strategies. A design may appear robust on paper yet leave weaknesses if actual gas behaviour is shaped by congestion, ventilation, process variation or future site changes that were not accounted for in the design logic. This is where many organisations run into a more subtle risk than outright under-protection: false confidence. The system is present, the requirement appears satisfied, but the protection may be less dependable than people assume.

The methane field shows the same challenge from a different angle. The regulatory focus on methane is important, and in many ways, overdue. But the value of monitoring should not be understood only as an obligation to report. Better leak visibility supports earlier intervention, more disciplined maintenance decisions and an understanding of where operational weakness is building. Technologies such as optical gas imaging matter not only because they help satisfy regulation, but because they turn an invisible exposure into something that can be seen, prioritised and acted on.

In Desu’s OGI & Methane Emission Monitoring division, we offer optical gas imaging tools with AI-supported detection, analysis and reporting capabilities. These tools help detect, visualise, analyse and report gas emissions with a high level of precision. This is valuable for companies operating under the recent EU methane emissions regulations, where accurate monitoring and reporting are becoming increasingly important. Our handheld OGI equipment makes methane monitoring more accessible and practical for field teams. It helps clients detect leaks efficiently, report accurately, reduce potential damage caused by gas leaks and support compliance.

A similar principle applies in suppression environments, even when context is very different. In commercial kitchens, the question is not only whether a suppression system is present or technically compliant, but whether it remains practical to inspect, maintain and trust over time in the working layout of the site. Protection becomes weaker whenever maintainability, service access or day-to-day operating reality are treated as secondary details rather than part of the safety decision itself.

In our Kitchen Fire & Hygiene Solutions division, we focus on addressing the increased fire risks found in commercial kitchens. The Buckeye Kitchen Mister system is specifically designed for cooking oil fires, classified as Type F in Europe and Type K in the United States. It offers an automatic and immediate response to fires in one of the most high-risk working environments. What makes this division interesting is that the value goes beyond safety and risk mitigation. One of our installation partners made the case that the system’s ease of design and ease of installation also create a strong business advantage. Because the system requires less time and effort to install, each installation can become more cost-effective, improving the installer’s return on investment.

In that sense, our support does not only help clients reduce risk – it can also support their growth. The measure of industrial safety leadership is not only an organisation’s ability to demonstrate compliance, but its ability to turn compliance into credible, site-specific protection. That requires technical competence and judgement. It requires asking better questions earlier.

Why the UK market raises the bar

The UK fire safety market is demanding in the best possible way. Compliance requirements are clear, documentation expectations are high, and there is little tolerance for ambiguity when it comes to performance and accountability. From industrial facilities and energy infrastructure to commercial kitchens and public-facing environments, fire safety decisions are scrutinised closely. 

This environment rewards clarity and technical depth. It also exposes weaknesses quickly. Systems that are poorly specified, incorrectly installed, or inadequately supported rarely remain unnoticed for long. For organisations involved in supplying and supporting fire safety technology, this creates both responsibility and opportunity. 

It is one of the reasons we continue to invest in people rather than relying solely on product availability. Technical expertise, local engagement, and the ability to have informed conversations early in a project lifecycle are essential if technology is to perform as intended. 

Training, certification and long-term support

We support clients in many ways, far beyond supply. Within our Flame & Gas Detection division, our product range includes ember detection, spark detectors, flame detectors and gas detectors. A key part of our support is system design. Based on site-specific data, including the size of the site, ATEX or non-ATEX classification, layout, landscape, visibility conditions and the types of gases or hazards present, we can assess which products are suitable and how they should be positioned.

Through site projection and technical assessment, we help clients understand the expected range and visibility of each detection product in their environment. This allows us to recommend a system design that is both cost-effective and reliable. The quality of the products is only one part of the equation, however. Correct configuration is also essential.

Because we serve a wide range of industries across 65 countries, we also take local and operational conditions into account. Climate, environment and site setting can affect how different products perform. Our role is to help each client select and configure the right tools for their operational needs. For example, we are currently involved in the development of several hydrogen plants across Europe. In these projects, the Spectrex 40/40D-M detector is especially relevant, as it is widely regarded as one of the strongest performing flame detectors for hydrogen applications.

Likewise, in our Armored Vehicle Fire Detection & Suppression division, we offer automatic vehicle fire suppression technology originally developed for armoured vehicles operating in extreme, high-risk conditions. Simply put, these systems are designed to save lives in some of the most demanding environments. Given the current geopolitical climate, demand for these systems is rising. We are also beginning to introduce these technologies to commercial vehicle applications. We see strong potential in this market, as these systems can help protect people and assets inside fuel-operated vehicles, which are naturally high-risk and highly combustible environments.

Across all divisions, Desu provides training workshops on a variety of technical topics. For installers, this can include relevant certification and practical installation knowledge.
